Car Age Calculator for Import Compliance

The single biggest legal trap in used car export compliance is confusing a vehicle's first registration date in Japan with its actual manufacture date. The Japanese Export Certificate lists the first registration month and year — when the vehicle was sold and licensed for road use — but the vehicle may have rolled off the assembly line months, or even a full model year, earlier. A Toyota Prius built in December 2018 but not registered until April 2019 is, on paper, "only" 7 years 9 months old by its registration date. Kenya's customs, which enforce their 8-year limit from the manufacture date, will calculate it as 8 years 1 month old on arrival — and reject it.

This gap matters most on vehicles sitting right at a country's cutoff, which is exactly where exporters are tempted to squeeze in one more sale before a deadline. The fix isn't complicated: pull the actual manufacture month and year — usually stamped on the chassis plate or visible in the auction sheet's vehicle data — before you commit to a bid, not after the vehicle has already cleared Japanese customs for export.

Age limits also aren't the only compliance dimension. Several markets on the matrix above require a specific pre-shipment inspection body (QISJ, EAA, JAAI, or JEVIC), enforce right-hand drive only, or apply escalating environmental levies past a secondary age threshold even where there's no hard cutoff. Treat the age check as the first filter, not the only one.
