What FOB actually covers
FOB (Free On Board) is the trade term exporters quote most often, and it is also the term new exporters most often price incorrectly. FOB is not the hammer price. It is the hammer price plus every fee required to get that specific vehicle loaded onto the vessel at a Japanese port: the auction house's buyer fee, the recycling deposit, inland transport from the auction site to the port, formal deregistration at the Land Transport Office, the export customs declaration, port handling, and — if you use one — your buying agent's service fee.
Exporters who quote FOB using only the hammer price consistently under-price their own margin. On a mid-range vehicle, Japan-side fees typically add 10–20% on top of the winning bid, and that gap only shows up once the final invoice from the auction house, transport company, and agent lands — usually after the buyer has already been quoted. Running the full total before you bid, not after, is what keeps that markup inside your margin instead of eating it.
FOB is also the number your buyer needs to compare offers cleanly. If you quote FOB and a competitor quotes CIF (which adds ocean freight and insurance on top), the two numbers are not comparable — and a buyer who doesn't understand the difference will assume the CIF quote is worse value when it may actually be complete. Always label your quote clearly as FOB or CIF, and use the same basis every competitor is using before comparing.
FOB calculator FAQ
What is FOB in car export?
FOB (Free On Board) is the total cost of a vehicle up to the point it is loaded onto the shipping vessel at the Japanese export port. It includes the vehicle price plus every Japan-side fee: auction buyer's fee, recycling fee, inland transport, deregistration, export customs, port handling, and agent fee. It does not include ocean freight or insurance — those are added on top to get a CIF price.
What's the difference between FOB and CIF?
FOB covers cost up to loading at the origin port. CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) adds ocean freight and marine insurance on top of FOB, covering cost up to the destination port. Buyers comparing quotes should always confirm whether a price is FOB or CIF, since the difference is often 15-30% of the vehicle's value.
Is the Japan recycling fee refundable?
The recycling deposit (Shigen Junkanho) paid at purchase is generally refunded to the exporter when the vehicle is deregistered for export, since it will not be recycled in Japan. Refund timing and process vary by auction house and agent, so confirm the refund workflow with your buying agent before assuming it offsets your total.
How accurate is this FOB calculator?
This tool totals the fee line items you enter — it does not fetch live rates. Default values are realistic starting points based on typical Japan-side fee ranges, but actual auction fees, transport costs, and agent charges vary by auction house, route, and vehicle. Always confirm final figures with your buying agent before quoting a buyer.
